Un niño sueña la obra. La autoridad en Atenas es inestable: Hermia rechaza la elección de su padre, el duque respalda a su padre y la duquesa se alía con Hermia. La elección de papá, Demetrio, persigue a Hermia, pero es amada por Helena. Cuando Hermia y su amante se encuentran en el bosque la noche siguiente, Helena le dice a Demetrius con la esperanza de que pueda seguir y cambiar de opinión.
