Obra inspirada en el ensayo "Las trampas de la fe", de Octavio Paz. Narra los últimos años de la célebre y bellísima Juana Inés de la Cruz (conocida en México como la Décima Musa), que a los veinte años ingresó en un convento para poder estudiar. La Corona española y la Iglesia, dos poderes a veces enfrentados, determinaron la vida de Sor Juana. En el México colonial, los virreyes la protegían, pero la Iglesia la censuraba por enseñar canto a sus alumnas y por dedicarse a la astronomía, la poesía, el teatro, la filosofía y la teología. Sor Juana pagaría muy caro su fervor poético y más aún su atrevimiento teológico. Al independizarse México, pierde la protección de la Corona y queda sola frente a su confesor, un miembro de la Inquisición, y al arzobispo de México, un misógino fanático. También el obispo de Puebla le tiende una trampa, en la que Sor Juana cae con la ingenuidad de los inocentes.

Francia, Edad Media (siglo XII). El film se inspira en la romántica relación amorosa entre el filósofo y teólogo Abelardo (1079-1142) y su joven pupila Eloísa (1101-1162). En cuanto se conocieron, se enamoraron, pero tuvieron que mantener su amor en secreto debido al voto de castidad de Abelardo.

Alex Rodak (Michael York) is a Polish director in exile in London with his family, which includes an older teenage son Adam (Michael Lyndon) who is struggling with an identity crisis, his wife (Joanna Szerzerbic), and another son. Rodak is in the throes of putting together a major show about Poland and the politics of exile at a West End theater. His single-minded determination to succeed causes him to take advantage of others, and because of his need for backing, he turns to a low-life businessman (John Hurt) to bail him out. His wife is anything but happy about his behavior and dislikes this last decision even more. This is an interesting study of how a father and son become alienated in a conflict between cultural identity and its exploitation.
