A viceroy and an archbishop take their posts in Mexico. A local nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), intrigues them. The viceroy and his wife find her brilliant and fascinating. The prelate finds her a symbol of European laxity. He engineers the election of a new abbess, severe and ascetic. The virreina visits Sor Juana often and inspires her to write passionate poetry that the archbishop finds scandalous. The viceroy protects her. After he is replaced and returns to Spain with his wife, Sor Juana faces envy and retribution. A bishop betrays her, her confessor humbles her. Plague, a tribunal, and her confession as "the worst of all" end the great poet's life.

마르다는 어릴 때부터 신통력을 가진 타고난 영매. 아버지와 함께 지방 교회를 돌며 미래를 예언해주고 돈을 벌어 살아간다. 어느 날 마르다가 예언한 살인이 실제로 일어나자 기자와 경찰, 그리고 누군가에게 고용된 해결사 킬러가 마르다를 추적한다. 피살자는 화학공장의 근로자로 당국의 안전감사 직전에 피살되어 신문기자 개리는 점점 의혹을 갖는다. 그러나 와인버그 경감은 악덕기업주 사일러스에게 매수되어 수사는 하지 않고 도리어 정보를 제공해주다 나중에야 수사에 나선다. 마르다는 또다시 있을 화학공장의 사고와 죽음을 예언하고, 그 또한 적중하자 그때까지 마르다의 신통력을 믿지 않던 개리도 킬러의 이름을 알려달라고 애원한다.

Abelard, a famous teacher of philosophy at the cathedral school of Notre Dame, falls in love with one of his students, Héloïse d'Argenteuil. A sixteen-year old girl raised in a convent, Héloïse has an intellectual curiosity and rebels against the status of women in 12th century Europe. When others begin to suspect their relationship, Heloise's uncle Fulbert and the bishop of Paris work together to put a stop to it. Héloïse becomes pregnant with Abelard's child, and they are married in secret. Abelard struggles for acting against the will of God, yet is unable to escape his love for Heloise.

Alex Rodak (Michael York) is a Polish director in exile in London with his family, which includes an older teenage son Adam (Michael Lyndon) who is struggling with an identity crisis, his wife (Joanna Szerzerbic), and another son. Rodak is in the throes of putting together a major show about Poland and the politics of exile at a West End theater. His single-minded determination to succeed causes him to take advantage of others, and because of his need for backing, he turns to a low-life businessman (John Hurt) to bail him out. His wife is anything but happy about his behavior and dislikes this last decision even more. This is an interesting study of how a father and son become alienated in a conflict between cultural identity and its exploitation.

로만 폴란스키 감독의 세 번째 장편영화. 갱스터 이야기를 전복적으로 우스꽝스럽게 비튼 작품인 막다른 골목은 처음에 제목을 사무엘 베케트의 부조리극 에서 제목을 따 로 지었을 정도로 초현실주의와 부조리 연극의 영향을 강하게 받았다. 이 영화는 로만 폴란스키 감독이 주로 다루는 모티브 중 하나인 캐릭터 사이의 파워 게임을 다룬다. 이 파워 게임의 특징은 희생자와 가해자의 역할이 끊임없이 바뀐다는 점. 로만 폴란스키 영화답게 사건은 갇힌 공간에서 펼쳐지는데, 배를 배경으로 한 , 아파트가 배경인 , , 만큼 폐쇄적이지는 않다. 그렇지만 도망갈 데가 없다는 점은 매한가지.

Helga and David travel to a secluded hotel for some alone time. Helga is much older than David and tongues wag among the other guests. The more time they are together the more age difference becomes a rift between them.
