El Mago de Oz (オズの魔法使い Ozu no Mahōtsukai?) es una película de anime coproducida entre Japón y Estados Unidos dirigida por Fumihiko Takayama a partir de un guion de Yoshimitsu Banno y Akira Miyazaki, que está basada en la novela de 1900 escrita por L. Frank Baum. Está producida por Yoshimitsu Banno y Katsumi Ueno para Toho. Aunque esta película no tiene ninguna relación con la serie anime de 1986 que produjo Panmedia, más allá de estar basada en el mismo libro, el hecho de que la película se estrenara en Japón el mismo año que la serie se emitió por primera vez (y el hecho de que ambas se publicaron también en Estados Unidos y Canadá) hace que los dos trabajos suelan confundirse.

Se enmarca dentro de la serie "Sekai Meisaku Douwa" que realizó la Toei entre los años 1977 y 1982, y que constaba de cinco peliculas a una por año, siendo la del año 1982 la que nos abarca, y correspondiendo las otras cuatro a Los Cisnes Salvajes "Hakuchou no Ouji" (1977), Pulgarcita "Oyayubi Hime" (1978), Anya la muchacha de la Nieve “Mori wa Ikiteiru” (1980) y El Lago de los Cisnes "Hakuchou no Mizuumi" (1981), todas editadas en España a principios de los años 80.

Up in Heaven, Yuki’s grandparents decide that, having turned thirteen years old, she must go down to Earth to a village that is torn by bandits and intervene to save its people. However if she does not succeed within one year she will become as insubstantial as the wind. Down in the village, Yuki is befriended by a group of orphans whose parents have all been killed by the bandits and who now subsist by begging. Yuki amazes them by taming the wild horse Blizzard. She is instrumental in getting the orphans and farmers to stand up to first the warring bandits and then Goemon, the greedy lord that owns the region. But Yuki must face her greatest challenge yet when the displeased Demon God that lives in the volcano emerges to destroy those who live beneath.
