Robert Wiene fue uno de los directores alemanes de cine mudo más destacados del siglo XX. Hijo del actor Carl Wiene, y por tanto en un ambiente artístico, Robert Wiene inició su carrera en el mundo del teatro. Demostró desde muy joven un gran interés por la escena hasta el punto de que pronto se convirtió en actor y director. Los conocimientos adquiridos en este medio le permitieron dar el salto al cine.
Se introdujo en la industria cinematográfica en 1912, creando un guión para Die Waffen der Jugend (1913). Pocos años después consiguió un contrato con una de las empresas de cine más importantes de su país: la Berliner Messter-Film, donde se ocuparía del guión y la dirección de más de 30 películas. Comenzó con La pobre Eva (1915), con Emil Jannings, y llegó a ser uno de los directores alemanes que sostuvieron con su producción la industria nacional. Sobre Wiene, entre otros, se apoyó el productor Erich Pommer mientras estuvo en los Estudios de la UFA; a su vez, Wiene recurrió al equipo de guionistas, directores de fotografía y decoradores de la casa para desarrollar cada uno de sus proyectos. Wiene fue, en principio, uno más del equipo de la UFA. Pero se dio el caso de que, después de poco más de diez películas, sorprendió a todo el mundo dirigiendo el clásico de terror El gabinete del doctor Caligari (1920) película con la que logró destacarse considerada como la primera película del cine expresionista alemán. Era un proyecto para Fritz Lang, pero el productor Erich Pommer finalmente se lo ofreció por su formación teatral: la película viene marcada por este marco. Los decorados fueron realizados por Walter Riemannn, Hermann Warm y Walter Röring, que dieron un tono irreal con sus pinturas angulosas, y sus puertas y perspectivas deformadas. El caso Caligari, dada la manipulación de la voluntad de ciertos individuos y por su aspecto patológico, ha sido analizado por Siegfried Kracauer (De Caligari a Hitler) y por Lotte Eisner (La pantalla demoniaca).
El gabinete del doctor Caligari aportó novedosas singularidades en el tratamiento del espacio y el uso de la luz, y marcó un cierto camino a la reflexión socio-política de la época. Tras esta película, Wiener no dejó de trabajar: dirigió en varias ocasiones a actores populares como Henny Porten, Conrad Veidt y Lily Damita, entre otros muchos, y escribió además diversos guiones para Friedrich W. Murnau (Satanás, 1920), Rudolph Biebrach y Karl Gerhardt hasta finales de los años veinte.
Su dilatada trayectoria se vio interrumpida con el ascenso al poder del nazismo, Después de la ascensión de Hitler al poder en 1933, Robert Wiene se marchó a Hungría, donde filmó la opereta Una noche en Venecia y luego huyó a París, donde quiso trabajar con Jean Cocteau en una nueva versión de Caligari. Falleció en París en 1938 de cáncer, cuando estaba a punto de finalizar el largometraje Ultimatum (1938). Fue concluido por Robert Siodmak, amigo suyo.
