Robert Wiene foi um ator, escritor e diretor de teatro e de cinema alemão, formado pela Universidade de Viena, trabalhou pela primeira vez no cinema a partir de 1913. Tinha fama de diretor de melodramas, antes de fazer seu filme mais famoso, O Gabinete do Dr. Caligari (1920), que é considerado um dos melhores exemplos do expressionismo alemão. Outro esforço notável na mesma linha foi o terror As Mãos de Orlac (1924). Wiene escapou da perseguição nazista buscando o exílio na França, onde morreu em 1938.
Seu irmão mais novo, Conrad, também se tornou ator, mas Robert Wiene primeiro estudou direito na Universidade de Berlim. Em 1908 também começou a atuar, inicialmente em pequenas partes no palco. Em 1919, Wiene ajudou a criar, com Heinz Hanus em Viena, uma associação profissional de diretores de cinema, que dirigiu até 1922. Nesse mesmo ano, iniciou uma produção para Erich Pommers do filme Decla de Berlim sobre o projeto O Gabinete do Dr. Caligari (1919 ) Reconhecido pela crítica contemporânea como epítome e ponto de partida dos filmes expressionistas, o quadro, para o qual Carl Mayer e Hans Janowitz forneceram o roteiro do filme e Hermann Warm, Walter Reimann e Walter Röhrig a cenografia, marcou uma virada na carreira de Wiene. Werner Krauss desempenhou o papel do médico louco Dr. Caligari, que dá espetáculos em feiras durante o dia e usa seu escravo sonâmbulo Cesare (interpretado por Conrad Veidt) para assassinar seu mestre à noite. O filme foi um extraordinário sucesso de público, tanto na Alemanha quanto no exterior.
A indústria cinematográfica o fascinou muito cedo e Robert Wiene realizou seu primeiro filme como diretor em 1913 com "Die Waffen der Jugend" (13). Ele também escreveu o roteiro para este filme, assim como fez para muitos de seus filmes dirigidos posteriormente.
Quatro meses depois que os nazistas tomaram o poder, o último filme de Wiene, Taifun, foi proibido em 3 de maio de 1933. Uma empresa de cinema húngara havia convidado diretores alemães para vir a Budapeste para fazer filmes em versões simultâneas alemão / húngara, devido à sua carreira incerta perspectivas sob o novo regime alemão Wiene aceitou a oferta em setembro para dirigir "Uma Noite em Veneza" (1934).
Wiene morreu em Paris dez dias antes do fim da produção de um filme de espionagem, Ultimatum, após ter sofrido de câncer. O filme foi finalizado pelo amigo de Wiene, Robert Siodmak.
