En los majestuosos estudios de cine Paramutual las cosas no funcionan como deberían. Surgen retrasos inesperados, pérdida incomprensible de materiales y demás incidentes que repercuten en el negocio. Tom Paramutual (Brian Donlevy), uno de los magnates que controlan los estudios, no entiende que está ocurriendo y decide emprender una investigación para hallar las causas de tan misterioso sabotaje. La investigación caerá en manos de Morty (Jerry Lewis), el más torpe y extravagante de todos los chicos de los recados que trabajan en Paramuntual, por la sencilla razón de que los dichosos saboteadores actúan siempre tras él.

Durante un viaje en un trasatlántico, Charles Pike, un soltero millonario experto en serpientes que vuelve de la jungla, se enamora de Jean Harrington, una jugadora profesional que, junto con su padre, hace trampas con las cartas. In his last film assignment, portly Walter Connolly fills the title role (in more ways than one) in The Great Victor Herbert. Very little of Herbert's life story is incorporated in the screenplay (a closing title actually apologizes for the film's paucity of cold hard facts); instead, the writers allow the famed composer's works to speak for themselves. In the tradition of one of his own operettas, Herbert spends most of his time patching up the shaky marriage between tenor John Ramsey (Allan Jones) and Louise Hall (Mary Martin). Many of Herbert's most famous compositions are well in evidence, including "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life", "March of the Toys" and "Kiss Me Again", the latter performed con brio by teenaged coloratura Susanna Foster. Evidently, the producers were able to secure the film rights for the Herbert songs, but not for the stage productions in which they appeared, which may explain such bizarre interpolations as having a song from Naughty Marietta.

Mr. Morris, the owner of a large metropolitan department store, gives jobs to paroled ex-convicts in an effort to help them reform and go straight. Among his 'employed-prison-graduates' are Helen Roberts and Joe Dennis, working as sales clerks. Joe is in love with Helen and asks her to marry him, but she is forbidden to marry as she is still on parole, but she says yes and they are married. In spite of their poverty-level life, their marriage is a happy one until Joe discovers she has lied about her past, in order to marry him. Disillusioned, he leaves, goes back to his old gang and plans to rob the department store.
