Jean-Claude Carrière coescribe la adaptación de la novela de Atiq Rahimi, también guionista y director, que narra la historia de una mujer, en un país de Oriente Medio, que tiene que quedarse en casa a cuidar de su marido, herido en una reyerta y en estado de coma. La mujer, joven y con dos hijas, alterna el tiempo que pasa en la casa, evitando a las guerrillas que siguen luchando en la calle, con el tiempo que pasa con su tía, una mujer liberada que se queda a cargo de las niñas.
Ali's Mother
Ali Alavi (Rafi Pitts) está intentando recuperar el tiempo perdido. Después de haber pasado una larga temporada en prisión, Ali está mucho tiempo con su esposa y su hija. El protagonista trabaja por la noche, pero se esfuerza por sacar tiempo para su familia y también para dedicarse a lo que más le gusta: la caza. Ali parece haber aprendido de los errores del pasado y ha adoptado un modo de vida relajado; sin embargo, un accidente inesperado dará de nuevo un giro a su vida. Baran es la historia de refugiados afganos contada a través de los ojos de Lateef (Hossein Abedini), un iraní adolescente. Mientras él y otros iranís pelean para llevar acabo un encuentro, los refugiados afganos pueden apenas sobrevivir, ya que ellos no pueden trabajar legalmente. Lateef, con un gran corazón pero un pícaro, trabaja como portero en una construcción, proporcionando té y comida a los trabajadores afganos que trabajan ilegalmente por un salario escaso. A group of superstitious inhabitants have erected a scarecrow for protection but soon find themselves terrorized by it. Made at the end of the Shah’s reign, the film offers a metaphorical reflection on power relations — how people create their own idols who turn around to terrorize them.

He spends his last days alone in the magnificent rooms of his wintry palace, from where he recollects the glory days of his ancestors as well as days of degradation. Among the latter are the gruesome manner in which his cruel grandfather murdered his mother and brother, and the way that he himself caused the death of his wife.
