Ramin es un joven gay de 30 años. Huyó de la persecución en Irán, y después de viajar clandestinamente en un barco desde Turquía llegó a la ciudad portuaria tropical de Veracruz, México. Allí está viviendo en el limbo del exilio, lejos de todo lo que sabe. Su nostalgia y melancolía se confrontan con nuevas amistades, mientras comienza a redescubrir sus propios deseos.

Eugenia es una ex cantante pop que está postrada en la cama y se está muriendo de cáncer. Ella es atendida por su hija, Helena, que sueña con viajar por el mundo y desea ser una estrella del pop glamorosa como lo fue su madre. Los sueños de su hermano menor, Sebastian, son simples y él simplemente quiere mudarse a la playa. Helena es inteligente y bonita, pero no tiene amigos, hombres o mujeres, está totalmente dedicada al cuidado de su madre y también está a punto de iniciar una relación incestuosa con Sebastián. Él, sin embargo, se está enamorando de un niño en la escuela llamado Juan, que es el matón de la escuela y el hijo de un padre soltero que posee un pequeño bar. Juan es el enemigo de la escuela preppy llamada Ismael, que proviene de un hogar tan rico que tiene su propio chofer y guardaespaldas. At 18, fresh from high school, Marina, Ignacio, Adam and Mimi, school mates bonded by fate, shared a dream about adult life, a dream of fame, success, perfect skin and that one endless, true love that, surely, was waiting just around the corner for each one of them. But 30's arrived, and none of the sweet promises of youth was fulfilled. Alone, failed and frustrated, all four are forced to stop and look around to try to understand where it all went wrong, and find an emergency fix for their lives, before it's too late, and happiness escapes through their fingers forever. Secondary Effects is the bitter coming of age comedy that follows their steps in the search for lost dreams, lost hair and good sex, at least, if true love turns out to be a mirage.

A view of the end-of-the-century Mexican family. A father who comes back home after a long absence, but who would rather be somewhere else. A daughter suffering from a trapped pain. A son full of guilt and recriminations. A little kid who soaks up all the tension in the house, like a sponge, and a self-effacing mother who would like to go away and leave everything behind.
