An abandoned tumbledown theater in the outback of Paraíba state is the initial setting of a film about cinema, which explores the testimonials of the novelist and playwright Ariano Suassuna and other filmmakers such as Ruy Guerra, Julio Bressane, Ken Loach, Andrzej Wajda, Karim Ainouz, José Padilha, Hector Babenco, Vilmos Zsigmond, Béla Tarr, Gus Van Sant and Jia Zhangke. They all respond to two basic questions: why do they make movies and why do they serve the seventh art. The filmmakers share their thoughts about time, narrative, rhythm, light, movement, the meaning of tragedy, the audience‘s desires and the boundaries with other forms of art.

The making of Cinema Paradiso and the characters of Toto and Alfredo

Don Vasari is an anti-conformist priest. For this reason he is transferred to a juvenile prison in a small town in the southern of Italy. Nino, a sixteen year old inmate, is accused of murder but Don Vasari does not believe his guilt and he starts a courageous investigation to help him.

Ciprì and Maresco's delicious documentary portrays Sicilian super-agent Enzo Castagna, a man with some 20,000 extras on his books, who has worked with the likes of Loren, Pasolini, Rosi, Coppola and Cimino (indeed, virtually anyone who's ever chosen to film in Palermo). It's typically weird, witty and wonderful, partly due to its subject, a self-styled 'little big man' who consents to be described as 'almighty' and 'the greatest contributor to Italian cinema in the last 35 years'. The local favourite has also done time for bribery, but refuses to comment on Cosa Nostra. The film is as astonishing as its subject. Shot in luscious b/w, it's driven forward by an offscreen interrogator who alternates between ludicrously hyperbolic flattery and forthright questions about corruption and crime. It also serves as a study of the way ethics get abandoned in the unending pursuit of fame, wealth and self-esteem.

The annual film festival in Venice is, of course, an ideal place to make a film (how come no-one has thought of it before). Everything is there in Pupi Avati's Festival: the famous hotels Des Bain and Excelsior on the Lido, the shimmering sandy beach which captivated Visconti. The film was made last spring and exploits the presence of passing film stars such as Jack Nicholson. We see the hysterical press conferences, where journalists and experts ask intelligent questions-without listening to the answers.

Gloria Ruckhauser has a dream: rediscovering the figure and features of herself when she was 20. Convinced that science is getting nowhere in the search for a cure to the aging process, Gloria sets up a foundation whose mission is to find a miracle potion. Various scientists take up the challenge and develop a substance that reverses the biological clock. Now, they face a new challenge. How to stop getting younger before it's too late.

A less-than-qualified and far-from-perfect priest is mistakenly named the new pope. As the pontiff, he must deal with Vatican corruption, the Mob and the reappearance of his old lover.

Set in Italy in 1946 just after World War 2, the film explores the lives and emotions of a group of patients who are terminally ill and confined to an isolated sanatorium.

Matteo Scuro (Marcello Mastroianni), un funcionario rural ya jubilado, decide recorrer Italia para visitar a sus cinco hijos, que viven en diferentes ciudades. Pero, desgraciadamente, este viaje sólo le sirve para comprobar que, bajo una apariencia de prosperidad y bienestar, la vida de sus hijos y sus familias está marcada por la tristeza y la insatisfacción. Tras el éxito de "Cinema Paradiso", Tornatore vuelve a hacer un emotivo melodrama, que obtuvo buenas críticas y el Premio del Jurado en Cannes.

Toto trata de entablar amistad con Alfredo, el proyeccionista del cine local, una persona muy irritable pero con un gran corazón. Todos estos hechos se presentan en forma de nostálgicos recuerdos de Toto que ha crecido hasta convertirse en un cineasta de éxito, y que revive a su infancia cuando recibe la noticia de que Alfredo ha muerto.
