Historia
Cineasta brasileño cuyo nombre se asocia a las vanguardias europeas del periodo de entreguerras. Frecuentó los ambientes artísticos franceses, dentro de los cuales realizó una película experimental de gran resonancia, Rien que les heures (1926). Más tarde alternó el documental y las películas de ficción, adaptaciones de obras literarias como Le capitaine Fracasse (1929). Fue llamado a Londres por John Grierson y su grupo de documentalistas y, convertido en productor, entre 1941 y 1949 realizó algunas películas de ficción. De regreso a Brasil, se dedicó a la enseñanza y a reorganizar la producción en su país. En esa época realizó O Canto do Mar (1953), una de sus obras más fuertes. De regreso a Europa rodó en Austria Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti (1960), según una obra del dramaturgo alemán Bertolt Brecht.

Se trata de una ilustración visual de una canción, La Dama de grava y Benech Lilie, con música para la versión en audio de 1930 por Darius Milhaud. Sólo hay una copia original de esta trágica historia e impresionista. La película cuenta la historia de Lili (la señora Catherine Hessling), huérfana de 16 años que ha perdido a toda su familia, pero ha conservado su pureza e inocencia. Por desgracia, un terrible destino le espera a esta niña optimista: en los barrios bajos de París se reunirá con un hombre que la llevará a ejercer la prostitución.

His only moments of lights are his mother and baby, but both die on the same day. Shocked, he leaves his hometown and goes to Monte Carlo, where he wins a fortune at the casino. Returning home, he reads his own obituary in a paper. They have found a corpse in a creek and connected it with his disappearance. Mathias, noticing that he is now free from all ties to his old life, decides to start a new one.

Sibilla, in desperation after a further rejection by Estiria, sees an opportunity to blackmail him by locking the lovers overnight in their meeting-place in the Alhambra.
