Oksana Akinshina nació en Leningrado, RSFS de Rusia, Unión Soviética (ahora San Petersburgo, Rusia), donde vive actualmente. Su padre era mecánico de automóviles y su madre contadora. Tiene una hermana menor. Comenzó a actuar a los 12 años, Akinshina fue descubierta por Sergei Bodrov, Jr., e hizo su debut en la pantalla en la película policíaca rusa Sisters (2001), el debut como directora del propio Bodrov.
