Pintura y cine se dan la mano de forma espectacular en 'El molino del tiempo', que basa su estética en la concepción visual del pintor flamenco del siglo XVI, Pieter Brueghel y en su cuadro "Camino del Calvario", en el que vemos el peregrinaje de una amorfa masa de gente que se dirige a contemplar la crucifixión de Cristo bajo un cielo gris perturbador. El pintor sitúa esta Pasión en su propia época, y la película se centra en una serie de personajes extraídos dentro de ese grupo de personas que acuden a ver por última vez a Jesús en la Cruz. En ese grupo encontramos al propio pintor (que encarna el actor Rutger Hauer, 'Blade Runner') y a varios de sus amigos y compañeros, que van desde un marchante de arte, Nicholas Jonghelinck (Michael York, 'Cabaret') hasta la Virgen María (Charlotte Rampling, 'Portero de noche').

Un soldado afgano (Vincent Gallo) es hecho prisionero por las tropas norteamericanas, acusado de haber matado a tres soldados. Posteriormente es trasladado a un país del este de Europa, para ser interrogado.
