幕末の庄内地方。海坂藩の御蔵役を務める井口清兵衛は、夕方に仕事を終えると同僚の酒の誘いも断り真っ直ぐ自宅に帰り、家事と内職にいそしんでいた。認知症を抱える老母と幼い2人の娘の世話、そして労咳で死んだ妻の薬代や葬儀などで嵩んだ借金を返済するためだ。日々の暮らしに追われ、次第に身なりが薄汚れていく清兵衛。同僚の中には、そんな彼を陰で「たそがれ清兵衛」と呼んで小馬鹿にする者もいた。 春、清兵衛は親友の飯沼倫之丞と再会する。倫之丞は妹の朋江が酒乱の夫・甲田豊太郎に度々暴力を振るわれるため、離縁させたことを清兵衛にうちあける。

三村新之丞は東北の小藩に仕える三十石の下級武士。剣術の覚えもあり、藩校でも秀才と言われながら、現在の勤めは毒味役。張り合いのない役目に不満を持ちながらも、美しく気立てのいい妻・加代とつましくも笑いの絶えない平和な日々を送っていた。ところが、そんな平穏な生活が一変してしまう。貝の毒にあたった新之丞が、一命は取り留めたものの失明してしまったのだ。絶望し、自ら命を絶とうとする新之丞を、加代は懸命に思い留まらせるのだった。しかし、武士としての勤めを果たせなくなった以上、藩の沙汰次第では生きていくことも叶わない。そこで加代は、嫁入り前からの顔見知りだった上級武士の島田藤弥に相談を持ちかけるのだったが…。

武州多摩の百姓の出である土方歳三。黒船が来航し開国を要求した江戸時代末期に、彼は“武士になりたい”という思いを胸に、近藤勇、沖田総司らと京都へ向かう。彼らは徳川幕府の後ろ盾のもと、新選組を結成し、土方は討幕派勢力制圧で多大なる活躍をみせる。

江戸時代、海坂藩の近習頭取・兼見三左ェ門は、藩主・右京太夫の失政の元凶である愛妾・連子を3年前に城中で刺し殺すものの寛大な処分によって再び藩主に仕えることに。亡妻・睦江のめいであり、身の周りの世話をしてくれる里尾との日々の中で生きる力を取り戻す。

大政奉還が行われた1867年、260年余り続いた江戸幕府が倒れて諸藩は東軍(旧幕府軍)と西軍(新政府軍)に分裂する。翌年には鳥羽・伏見の戦いをきっかけに戊辰戦争へとなだれ込むが、越後の小藩である長岡藩の家老・河井継之助は冷静に事態を見守っていた。彼は東軍と西軍いずれにも属さない武装中立を目指し、和平を願い談判に挑むが...。

享保15年。藩の不正を訴え出たために藩を追われた瓜生新兵衛。追放後も連れ添い続け、病に倒れた妻・篠は、死の床で最期の願いを新兵衛に託す。それは、新兵衛のかつての友にしてライバルであり、藩追放に関しても大きな因縁を持つ人物・榊原采女を助けてほしいというものだった。妻の願いをかなえるため故郷へ戻った新兵衛は、やがてある確証を得て采女と対峙する。過去の不正事件の真相や妻の本当の思いを知る新兵衛だったが、その裏では大きな力が彼を襲おうとしていた。＜名カメラマンの木村大作が、「劔岳」「春を背負って」に続く映画監督第3作として手がけた時代劇。原作は葉室麟の同名小説＞

幕末。東北の小藩である海坂藩の平侍であった片桐宗蔵は、母と妹の志乃、女中のきえと貧しくも平穏な日々を送っていた。やがて母が亡くなり、志乃ときえは嫁入りしていった。ある雪の日、宗蔵ときえは３年ぶりに町で再会するが、きえのやつれた表情に宗蔵は胸を痛める。きえが嫁ぎ先で酷い扱いを受け寝込んでいることを知った彼は自宅へ連れ帰り、回復したきえと共に暮らし始める。そんな時、藩に大事件が起きた。宗蔵と同じく藩の剣術指南役・戸田寛斎の門下生だった狭間弥市郎が謀反を企んだ罪で囚われ、さらに山奥の牢を破って逃げ出したのだ。宗蔵は、逃亡した弥市郎を斬るよう家老に命じられる。

時の将軍である徳川家光は次男の徳松を溺愛し、長男の竹千代を亡き者にしようとしていた。竹千代は幕府の刺客に襲われるが、腕に覚えのある浪人たちに助けられ事なきを得た。元服式のため江戸城への出仕を命じられた竹千代は、石河刑部ら浪人たちに守られながら江戸城へ向かう。道中、幕府の刺客たちが次々に現れ、浪人たちは命がけで竹千代を守り続けるのだった。

アニメ映画「BLACKFOX」の連動企画で実写版として製作された特撮アクション時代劇。アニメ版の主人公の石動律花の先祖の江戸時代の女性忍者の活躍を描く「エピソードゼロ」。
