1918年、トム（マイケル・ファスベンダー）は戦争から帰還するものの、心は深く傷ついていた。その後彼は、灯台守の仕事に就く。彼はオーストラリア西部の岬からおよそ160キロメートルも先の孤島ヤヌス島に渡り、3か月の間一人で生活する。そして正式に採用されたトムは契約のために町に戻り、土地の名士の娘イザベル（アリシア・ヴィキャンデル）と出会う。
