昭和15年。東京本所区（現・墨田区）に住む八才のかよ子は、五代続いた釣竿店の娘で、働き者の両親と、三人の兄、祖母の愛情に包まれて、明るく健やかに育っていた。昭和16年、弟の誕生に姉である喜びを実感するかよ子だったが、12月8日、日本は太平洋戦争に突入し、町には出征兵士を見送る光景が見られるようになる。昭和19年6月、Ｂ29爆撃機の来襲が頻繁になり、かよ子はたった一人で沼津の伯母の所へ縁故疎開することになる。そして、昭和20年3月9日の夜、沼津で箱根の山脈ごしに真っ赤に燃える東京の空を見るかよ子は、この大空襲で父も母も兄二人と弟、祖母の家族六人が死んだことを、唯一生き残った兄・喜三郎から聞かされるのだった。そんな絶望の中で敗戦を迎え、親せきの家を転々としたかよ子は、本所の焼け跡で思い出の品の残骸を拾い、かつてこの辺りで「うしろの正面だあれ」と歌って遊んだ友達や家族のことを想い、泣き続けた。そんな時、ふっと「かよ子は明るく人に好かれる子だからだいじょうぶ。自信をもたなきゃね」と、いつも励ましてくれた母親の言葉がよみがえってくる。そして、この言葉をかみしめながら、死んだ家族のためにも生き抜こうと決心したかよ子は、明日に向かって一歩一歩踏みしめ、歩きだすのだった。
Rural Mississippi in the 1940s: Lucas Beauchamp, a local black man with a reputation of not kowtowing to whites, is found standing over the body of a dead white man, holding a pistol that has recently been fired.
