One evening the Collins find their maid Mrs. Murdock at the end of their steps: dead, neck broken. Obviously she had an accident. Consequently they need a new babysitter for an upcoming big party. The sensible Helen meets little Susan Collins at the discount market and likes her, so she offers to do the job. She doesn't know Susan's teenage brother Mark - technically skilled and good in school, but restive and cunning. As soon as the parents have left, he starts psychologically terrorizing Helen and his sister with electronic tricks.
Sophie, a quiet and shy maid working for an upper-class French family, finds a friend in the energetic and uncompromising postmaster Jeanne, who encourages her to stand up against her bourgeois employers.

フランスを代表する新旧８人の大女優たちが歌って踊る、絢爛豪華にしてとびきり楽しいミュージカル仕立てのミステリー。監督は早くも風格さえ感じさせ始めたフランスでもっとも期待を集める若手監督、「焼け石に水」「まぼろし」の鬼才フランソワ・オゾン。主が殺され、互いに疑心暗鬼になる８人の女性たちの姿をユーモアと毒気をちりばめた才気溢れる演出で描く。2002年ベルリン国際映画祭では、本作で夢のような競演を果たした女優陣全員に銀熊賞（最優秀芸術貢献賞）が授与され話題を振りまいた。
1950年代のフランス。クリスマスを祝うため、雪に閉ざされた大邸宅に家族が集うこととなった。その日の朝、メイドのルイーズが、一家の主マルセルの部屋へ遅い朝食を持っていくと、彼はナイフで背中を刺され死んでいた。外から何者かが侵入した形跡はない。電話線は切られ、雪で外部との連絡を完全に絶たれた８人の女たち。祝祭気分は一転、彼女たちは疑心暗鬼を募らせていく。やがて、互いの詮索が始まる。そして、次々と彼女たち一人ひとりの思惑や秘密が暴露されていく…。
演劇学院生のイヴは車を運転しながら、友人のジョナサンの告白を聞く。彼は愛人の女優シャーロットの殺人の後始末をしようとして女中に目撃されて逃げてきたところだという。当然のように犯人扱いされた彼をイヴは海辺の別宅に住む父に匿うよう頼む。そして、シャーロットの女中を買収し、その従妹ドリスとして女優の身辺を探るイヴだったが、偶然知り合った刑事スミスが彼女に興味を持ち付きまとうので、せっかくの一人二役もバレそうになる…。

Martial is discharged from a mental insitution where he spent a few years due to a serious nervous breakdown. Upon his return he finds his mother, a busy business woman who owns a supermarket chain, convinced that her son will be able to find himself again if tasked with some responsibilities. Soon enough, he's sent to Limoges on a business trip to check on one of their stores in the hope to reinvigorate the failing business. Once he arrives, Martial is faced with responsibilities he had never imagined, including dealing with the store's personnel.

Five maids in São Paulo are observed in this episodic, impressionistic film. The women interact with each other, ride busses, work, and have longings: Rai for a husband, Créo for her lost daughter, Roxane for a career in modeling. Quitéria is naive, a gull for thieves. Cida has a husband and also a lover. While each woman gets what she wishes for (more or less), it doesn't always make things better.
