シノプシス
メラニーはニューヨークで活躍する若手ファッション・デザイナー。恋人のアンドリューは富豪にしてニューヨーク市長の息子。仕事もプライベートも誰もが憧れるパーフェクトな毎日を送っていた。そして新作コレクション発表の当日、ショーを無事終えた彼女は貸し切りのティファニーでついにアンドリューからプロポーズを受けるのだった。まさに人生最高の瞬間、のはずが、1つだけ気がかりなことがあった。彼女には故郷アラバマに、高校時代はずみで結婚してしまい、以来いまだに離婚に応じてくれない戸籍上の夫ジェイクがいたのだった…。

名門ハイスクールに通う奨学生チャーリーは、アルバイトで目の不自由な退役軍人フランクの世話を引き受けた。翌朝、校長の愛車がペンキまみれにされるという事件が起き、犯人を目撃した彼は、校長に呼び出される。犯人を明かさなければ退学だが、犯人を密告した場合ハーバード大学への奨学金も約束すると言われたチャーリー。悩みながらフランクを訪ねた彼は、有無を言わさずその足でニューヨークへの旅に同行させられる。
ニューヨークで深夜、トンネルの工事現場で明らかに他殺とみられる遺体が発見され、辣腕の科学捜査官リンカーン・ライムが派遣された。リンカーンは重要な証拠を採取する前に現場を荒らされたくないがために自分以外の捜査官を全て遺体発見現場から遠ざけ、一人狭いトンネルの奥に潜り込んで行った。瓦礫の下敷きになっていた遺体の顔を見ると、リンカーンは驚愕した。そこに横たわっていたのは自分の遺体で、驚愕のあまり硬直している間にトンネルの上から重い金属製のパイプが降ってきた。
