1821年、ラス・カリフォルニアスの最後のアルタ・カリフォルニア総督であったラファエル・モンテロは民衆の不満が高まりサンタ・アナ率いる革命軍の侵攻が迫る中、農民の処刑を餌に覆面の剣士怪傑ゾロを捕らえようとしたがゾロを英雄視する農民たちによって妨げられる。予てからスペイン貴族ディエゴ・デラ・ベガがゾロの正体ではないかと目を付けていたモンテロはディエゴ邸を襲う。ディエゴは捕らえられ、妻は殺され、幼い娘エレナはモンテロに奪われてしまう。

ネバダの砂漠地帯にある小さな田舎町に突然出現した未知の生物。地中を自在に移動する巨大な蛇状モンスターと住民の攻防が、白昼の下で展開される。「JAWS／ジョーズ」のプロットを使った作品は数限りないが、地表を波立たせて襲い来るこのモンスターは文字通り“陸のジョーズ”で、映画の出来も本家に迫るものがある。モンスターの設定から、それを有効に生かしきったストーリーまで、とにかくアイディア豊富で、存分に楽しめる怪獣映画の快作。TVムービーによる続編「トレマーズ2」も製作された。
