NY。メルヴィン・ユドールは人気の恋愛小説家だが、普段は毒舌で友人が少なく、しかも気難しくて潔癖症という中年男性。ある日、同じアパートに住むゲイの画家、サイモンの飼い犬を預かることになり、それから心を少し外に開くように。メルヴィンはサイモンの帰省旅行に付き合うが、行きつけのレストランでウェイトレスをしているシングルマザー、キャロルも同行することに。道中、メルヴィンはキャロルに愛を告白する。
