ニューヨークにやって来た青年スレヴン（ジョシュ・ハートネット）は友人に間違えられ、大物ギャングのボス（モーガン・フリーマン）に拉致されてしまう。ボスは借金返済の代わりに敵対するギャング、ラビ（ベン・キングズレー）の息子殺害を命令。しぶしぶ了解したスレヴンは、その後まもなく今度はラビに誘拐される。

　1929年10月、アメリカは株の大暴落で大恐慌時代に陥った。それまで自動車ディーラーとして成功を収めていたハワードは、最愛の息子を交通事故で亡くし、妻にも去られてしまった。そんな彼は1933年、運命的に出会った女性マーセラと結婚。そして、乗馬の愛好家である彼女に影響を受け、競馬の世界に傾倒していく。やがて、彼はカウボーイのスミスを調教師として雇う。スミスは“シービスケット”と呼ばれる小柄で気性の荒いサラブレッドの潜在能力に目を付け、その騎手として気の強い男ジョニー・ポラードを起用するのだった。
