How Winnie Mandela went from innocent country girl to a fighter against apartheid.
1982年、南アフリカ共和国のヨハネスブルク上空に突如宇宙船が出現した。しかし、上空で静止した巨大な宇宙船からは応答や乗員が降りる様子はなく、人類は宇宙船に乗船しての調査を行うことを決定。知的生命体との接触に世界中の期待が集まる中行われた調査であったが、船内に侵入した調査隊が発見したのは、支配層の死亡と宇宙船の故障により難民となった大量のエイリアンであった。 乗船していたエイリアンたちは地上に移り、隔離地区である「第9地区」で難民として、MNU (英：Multi-National United) と呼ばれる超国家機関による管理・監視のもとで生活することになったが、文化や外見の違いから人間とエイリアン達との間では小競り合いが頻発する。人間達のエイリアンへの反発や差別は強まり、やがて彼等に対しては「エビ」（外見がエビ[=PRAWN]に似ているため）という蔑称が定着するようになった。 そして宇宙船出現から28年後、ついにエビ達を新たに用意された彼ら専用の居住区域である第10地区に移住させることが決定し、MNUの職員であるヴィカスは、立ち退き要請の同意を得るため第9地区を訪れるが、エイリアンの家で見つけた謎の液体を不注意により浴びてしまう。

Based on the true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca, the film focuses on half-brothers Paco and Cruz, and their bi-racial cousin Miklo. It opens in 1972, as the three are members of an East L.A. gang known as the "Vatos Locos", and the story focuses on how a violent crime and the influence of narcotics alter their lives. Miklo is incarcerated and sent to San Quentin, where he makes a "home" for himself. Cruz becomes an exceptional artist, but a heroin addiction overcomes him with tragic results. Paco becomes a cop and an enemy to his "carnal", Miklo.

ピューリッツァ賞を受賞したＨ・リーの『ものまね鳥を殺すには』を劇作家Ｈ・フートが脚色（オスカー受賞）、後に「サンセット物語」や「レッド・ムーン」などの社会派ドラマを多く手掛ける製作パクラ＝監督マリガンのコンビが映画化した問題作。不況の風吹く１９３２年、南部のアラバマ州。幼い息子と娘を抱える弁護士フィンチに、暴行事件で訴えられた黒人トムの弁護の任が下る。だが偏見根強い町の人々は黒人側に付いたフィンチに冷たく当たるのだった……。映画はフィンチの子供たちを通して、父親の苦難や町の横暴を極めて客観的に描く事に成功しており、問題意識を振りかざさず、しんみりと心に染み入らせるものになっている。ペックは心強い父親像をよく出しており、アカデミーの主演男優賞に輝いた。黒人弁護のストーリーと並行して、近所に住む精神異常者ブー（Ｒ・デュヴァル）と子供たちの関係も描出されるが、これが物語の終息で融合し、映画に深い余韻を持たせている。
