The San Francisco area is beset by a series of seemingly random murders without motive or pattern. The police are taunted by phone calls and letters. Could the maniac be the violent, truck driver, or the seemingly mild-mannered mailman, or even a cop?
Edward is busy trying to unlock the secrets of reading and recording people's thoughts. He is very involved with his work leaving little room for girlfriend Britt. Longstreet comes along and offers Edward a place to do his research and have unlimited funding. There are, however, ulterior motives as Edward is also somehow unlocking the secrets of eternal life.

幽体離脱して霊界へ乗り込み、悪霊に狙われた息子ダルトンを救い出した父親ジョシュ。ようやく平穏を取り戻したランバート一家だったが、ある日、ジョシュが突然何かに憑依されてしまう。かつてダルトンが昏睡して霊界とつながったのは、もとをたどればジョシュ自身に宿る特異な才能を受け継いだからだったのだ。やがて、一家を襲う心霊現象の大本に、封印されたジョシュの幼いころの記憶が関わっていることが分かる。

3人の子を持つルネとジョシュの夫婦は、引っ越しの矢先、物が移動したり、ベビーモニターから不気味な声が聞こえるなどの怪奇現象に悩まされる。そんな中、はしごから落ちた小学生の長男が昏睡状態に陥ってしまう。検査でも異常は見られなかったものの、なぜか長男は意識を回復しない。恐怖を感じたルネは夫に懇願して再び引っ越すが、彼らの後を追うように怪現象は止まず、ついに霊媒師や牧師に助けを求める。
