夫を悲惨な事故で失ったシングルマザーのアメリアは、一人息子のサミュエルと共に暮らしていた。サミュエルは学校でしばしば暴力的な行動を起こす問題児。言うことを聞かない息子に手を焼き、アメリアは疲れ果てていた。一方、サミュエルは、母親の読み聞かせで眠りにつくのが習慣で、その日はアメリアの知らない一冊の本を取り出し、彼女に読んで欲しいとせがむ。どこか薄気味の悪いその絵本は「ババドック」というキャラクターが登場する不思議な本だった。
