J・ウェイン主演の名作「勇気ある追跡」の原作となったC・ポーティスの小説を、「ノーカントリー」のコーエン兄弟が、製作総指揮にスティーヴン・スピルバーグと豪華タッグで映画化したヒューマンドラマ。雇い人に父親を殺された14歳の少女マティ（ヘイリー・スタインフェルド）は、逃亡した犯人への復しゅうを心に誓い、真の勇気を持つといわれる連邦保安官のコグバーン（ジェフ・ブリッジス）に犯人の追跡を依頼。腕はいいが大酒飲みのコグバーンは、最初はマティをはねつけるが、彼女の強い執念に押し切られ同行することに。テキサス・レンジャーのラビーフ（マット・デイモン）も加わり、かたきのチェイニー（ジョシュ・ブローリン）を追うこととなる。
