中年男に体を売って生活するマイクは、緊張すると昏睡状態に陥るナルコレプシー病を持つ。一方スコットは良家のボンボンながら、家出をしていた。そんな二人がマイクの母親探しの旅に出る。
16世紀末のロンドン。スランプに陥っていた劇作家シェイクスピアはオーディションにやって来た一人の若者トマス・ケントを追ってとある屋敷へたどり着く。そこには以前、芝居の最中に目を留めた美しい女性ヴァイオラの姿があった。シェイクスピアと彼を信奉するヴァイオラはたちまち恋におちてしまう。燃え上がる恋心が創作意欲をかき立てたのか、シェイクスピアの台本は急ピッチで仕上がって行き、トマス・ケントを主役とした芝居の稽古も順調に進んでいた。ヴォイオラの別れの手紙をトマスから受け取ったシェイクスピアは納得できず再びトマスの後を追うのだが、そこで彼はトマスこそヴァイオラの男装した姿だった事を知るのだった。
エリザベス1世の統治する16世紀末のロンドン。女王の側近であるセシル卿は、大衆を扇動するとして当時隆盛を誇った演劇に対する弾圧を強めていた。一方、女王の後継問題でセシル卿と対立するオックスフォード伯は、まさにその演劇の力で政敵を失脚させようと考えていた。文才に長けた伯爵は、セシル卿に投獄された気鋭の劇作家ベン・ジョンソンを解放し、自らが記した戯曲をベンの名で上演するよう命じるのだが……。
シェイクスピアの『マクベス』を日本の戦国時代に置き換え様式美に拘り描いた戦国武将の一大悲劇。鷲津武時は謀反を起こした敵を討ち、その帰途の森で出会った老婆から不思議な予言を聞く。やがて予言通り事が運び始めると、欲望に取り憑かれた妻にそそのかされて主を殺し、自ら城主の地位につくのだったが……。
An adaptation of the play by William Shakespeare. Prospera (a female version of Shakespeare's Prospero) is the usurped ruler of Milan who has been banished to a mysterious island with her daughter. Using her magical powers, she draws her enemies to the island to exact her revenge.
A・パチーノの初監督作品。シェイクスピア作品では難解とされる、『リチャード三世』の映像化をめぐるドキュメンタリー。彼は主演の他、製作とナレーション台本も共同で担当している。出演者はみな俳優である自分自身として登場し、映画化のためのディスカッションやリハーサルに加え、実際に扮装、演技までする。これに街頭でのインタヴューやシェイクスピアの生家の探訪、シェイクスピア作品ゆかりの俳優のインタヴューが挿入される。これらは『リチャード三世』のストーリーに沿って展開されるが、前記の模様が様々にモンタージュされ、配役や作品の解釈は言うに及ばず、シェイクスピアやその作品の解釈、それに取り組む様を浮き彫りにしていく。単なるメイキングにとどまらず、演じる様子だけでなく、映像化された画面や、映像化に向けての様々なアプローチを取り入れることにより、親しみのある作品に仕上がっている。劇中インタヴュー出演はJ・ギールガッド、K・ブラナー、V・レッドグレイヴ、D・ジャコビ、J・R・ジョーンズ、K・クライン。全米監督組合でドキュメンタリー部門の監督賞を受賞。
