19世紀のロンドン。貧しい人たちが暮らす施設で母親が亡くなった時に生まれた息子、オリバーは元気のいい少年に成長するが、飢えた子どもたちの心を代弁したために施設から追い出されてしまう。オリバーはすりの少年ドジャーと知り合い、彼の仲間に加わり、老紳士ブラウンローに初仕事を仕掛けるが失敗。だが、ブラウンローはなぜかオリバーのことを気に入る。やがてオリバーの親戚に関して意外な事実が明らかになっていく。
