エドワードは、発明家の博士によって生み出された人造人間。だが、完成直前に博士が急死してしまった為、彼は両手がハサミのままこの世に残されてしまう。その後、ゴースト屋敷のような丘の上の家で、顔が傷だらけで孤独な日々を送っていた彼の元にある日、化粧品のセールス・ウーマンのペグが訪ねて来た。心優しい彼女は、そんな彼の姿に同情し、自分の家に連れて帰る。そうして家の中へ通された彼は、写真に写っているペグの娘キムに心奪われ、彼女に恋してしまう。

ニューヨークにやって来た青年スレヴン（ジョシュ・ハートネット）は友人に間違えられ、大物ギャングのボス（モーガン・フリーマン）に拉致されてしまう。ボスは借金返済の代わりに敵対するギャング、ラビ（ベン・キングズレー）の息子殺害を命令。しぶしぶ了解したスレヴンは、その後まもなく今度はラビに誘拐される。

His sweetheart Christine's father lands Antoine a job as a security guard, which he promptly loses. Stumbling into a position assisting a private detective, Antoine falls for his employers' seductive wife, Fabienne, and finds that he must choose between the older woman and Christine.

Lorelei Lee is a beautiful showgirl engaged to be married to the wealthy Gus Esmond, much to the disapproval of Gus' rich father, Esmond Sr., who thinks that Lorelei is just after his money.
