J・ウェイン主演の名作「勇気ある追跡」の原作となったC・ポーティスの小説を、「ノーカントリー」のコーエン兄弟が、製作総指揮にスティーヴン・スピルバーグと豪華タッグで映画化したヒューマンドラマ。雇い人に父親を殺された14歳の少女マティ（ヘイリー・スタインフェルド）は、逃亡した犯人への復しゅうを心に誓い、真の勇気を持つといわれる連邦保安官のコグバーン（ジェフ・ブリッジス）に犯人の追跡を依頼。腕はいいが大酒飲みのコグバーンは、最初はマティをはねつけるが、彼女の強い執念に押し切られ同行することに。テキサス・レンジャーのラビーフ（マット・デイモン）も加わり、かたきのチェイニー（ジョシュ・ブローリン）を追うこととなる。

幼い頃に遭遇した悲しい事件への復讐をもくろむ悪霊ハンターのトントは、そのスピリチュアルな力で死の一歩手前の男、ジョンを救う。正義感の強いジョンは、目的を達成するためならどんな手段も用いるトントと衝突するも、愛する者を奪われたことで豹変。マスクを装着し“ローン・レンジャー”と名乗り、トントと一緒に巨悪に挑む。

Dusty falls for nurse April Logan, who is also loved by Mountie Jim Brett. April's brother is involved with Courbeau's daughter Louvette, which leads to trouble during the battles between the rebels and the Mounties. Through it all Dusty is determined to bring Corbeau back to Texas (and April, too, if he can manage it.)
