Basically we just drove around aimlessly, stopping any time we saw something or someone that interested us and one thing would lead to another and the universe would pull us in one direction or another. Most of what you’re seeing in the final film is the entirety of our interaction with these guys. It was quick and to the point and I didn’t even interview people besides the occasional “Any words of wisdom?” So what we got was a whole bunch of people telling stories and talking about whatever was on their mind. It was a strange and exciting journey that took us to a lot of places we didn’t expect.

マイアミのナイトクラブ「バードケージ」のオーナー・アーマンドと、店の花形にしてアーマンドの長年のパートナー、アルバート。アーマンドには、20年前に運命のいたずらで授かった息子ヴァルがおり、アルバートも母親代わりとなって彼を育ててきた。ある日アーマンドは、大学に通うヴァルから同級生バーバラとの婚約を報告される。喜ぶアーマンドだったが、バーバラの父親は不道徳を許さない堅物の政治家というから大変。こんな生活を見られては台無しと、アーマンドたちは普通の家族を演じるべく準備にとりかかる。
死者が蘇り人間を食らう世界。死者の数がもやは手が付けられぬほど増加し絶望的になっていく。フロリダの地下軍事基地でゾンビ研究を行いながら細々と生き残るグループ。ローガン博士はゾンビを飼いならし人間を襲わないよう凶暴性を取り除く実験に光を見出していたが一向に進展しない状況に軍隊グループと次第に軋轢が高まっていく。施設内で実験としてゾンビを飼いならすまともでない実験が軍の指揮官ローズに発覚した事で、張り詰めていた緊張が爆発し軍人たちは研究者を襲撃し格納していたヘリで脱出を始めるが、追い詰めらた彼らはゲートを開けてしまいゾンビがなだれ込んで来る。
テロリスト対策の専門家のジョン・カッターは自分の妻が目の前で人質に捕られ殺害されてからは心に傷を負い一線を退き、今は航空会社のハイジャック対策の講師をしていた。そんなある日、友人で会社の仲間でもあるデルヴェッキオから新しいテロ対策の仕事を進められる。
しぶしぶながらも最後は折れてカッターはその仕事のための会議に出席するため飛行機に搭乗する。しかし、その飛行機には凶悪なテロリストのチャールズ・レーンも護送のため乗り合わせいて、仲間と共に飛行機をハイジャックしてしまう。混乱のなかでカッターは事態を収拾するべく反撃を開始する。
