The Long Shot (1939)

あるニューヨークの競馬場。人気No.1の競走馬・ワシントンが優勝。しかし、騎手はルパンであり、麻酔銃で眠らせるという姑息な手を使っていたため、銭形には正体を見破られていた。もちろん、ルパンはワシントンとその競走馬に賭けて大金を手に入れた次元と共に競馬場を逃走した・・・、という6日後に行うその競馬場の売上金の強奪計画の完璧なシミュレーションをある宿舎で立てたルパン。前祝だと街へと繰り出し、途中用事を思い出した次元と別れたとルパンは、怪しげな男たちに追われている少女・ミシェルを助ける。彼女はルパンに悪事を働いている父親・ガズ・キューイックからダイヤ「女神の涙」を奪い、悪事を阻止してほしいという依頼を受ける。6日後には競馬場の金、上手くすればダイヤも手に入るかもしれないとふんだルパンは彼女の依頼を受けることにする。

RACETRACK is about the Belmont Race Track, one of the world's leading race tracks for thoroughbred racing. The film highlights the training, maintaining and racing of thoroughbred horses. Everyday occurrences are shown: in the backstretch — the grooming, feeding, shoeing, and caring for horses and the preparation for races; at the practice track the various aspects of training, exercising, and timing the horses; at the paddock — the pre-race presentation of the horses; and in the grandstand — betting and watching the races. The film also has sequences showing the variety of work done by trainers, jockeys, jockey agents, grooms, hot walkers, stable hands, and veterinarians.

A couple attempts to win custody of their orphaned grandson, who's being raised by his veterinarian uncle in a racetrack environment.

A racetrack melodrama, The Long Shot features Marsha Hunt and Gordon Jones as trainers of a thoroughbred horse. Despite the rivalries of their parents, the couple prepares to jointly enter the Santa Anita handicap. The odds are against their entry, but Hunt and Jones have every confidence of winning. Just before the starting bugle, gangsters intrude, demanding that the trainers throw the Big Race.

Their jobs and their lives are placed in jeopardy when they accidently fumble $50,000 worth of the bookie's cash over to the secretary who wastes no time in spending $44,000 of it in less than 8 hours. The bookkeepers are given 36 hours to get all of the money back by their infuriated boss.

The boy reluctantly agrees, but when he discovers that his favorite horse Starlight is sick, he decides to bring the animal back to health and then enter him in the Governor's Race, whose $5000 prize would enable Dan to pay off his father's mortgage and keep the business in the family.
