優等生でスポーツ万能な学生ニック。父デヴィッドにとっては自慢の息子であり、父と再婚相手カレンの間に生まれた幼い弟と妹にとっても良き兄だった彼は、ふとしたはずみでドラッグに手を出してしまう。最初は軽い気持ちだったが、気づいたときには底なしの泥沼から抜け出せなくなっていた。そんなニックの深刻な薬物依存を知ったデヴィッドは、息子の更正を信じて彼のリハビリを懸命にサポートするのだったが…。

初老の男ウィルはホテルの一室で、過去に犯した妻殺しの顛末を書き記していく。1922年。ウィルは妻アルレットや14歳の息子ヘンリーと農場を営んでいた。しかし田舎暮らしを嫌うアルレットは、自身が権利を持つ農場の土地を売り払って都会に引っ越したいと言い出す。農場を離れたくないウィルは、強引に土地を売り出そうとするアルレットの殺害を決意。同じく都会行きを嫌がるヘンリーを説得して片棒を担がせ、計画を実行に移すが……。
