1979年夏、カリフォルニア州西海岸の古ぼけた家で、シングルマザーの母親ドロシアとともに暮らす15歳の少年ジェイミー。家には、2人のほかに、20代半ばの女性写真家アビーと、元ヒッピーの便利屋のウィリアムが間借りしていた。息子が反抗期を迎え、自分だけでは手に負えなくなってきたのを懸念したドロシアは、アビーと、近所に住む17歳の不思議少女ジュリーに、ジェイミーのサポートをぜひよろしく、と頼み込む。

His sweetheart Christine's father lands Antoine a job as a security guard, which he promptly loses. Stumbling into a position assisting a private detective, Antoine falls for his employers' seductive wife, Fabienne, and finds that he must choose between the older woman and Christine.
Now aged 17, Antoine Doinel works in a factory which makes records. At a music concert, he meets a girl his own age, Colette, and falls in love with her.
