オマーンの港からケニア・モンバサへ、物資を運ぶため航行していたアメリカの大型貨物船マースク・アラバマ号が、ソマリア沖で武装した海賊4人組に襲撃される。武装していなかったアラバマ号はあっという間に占拠されてしまう。船長のリチャード・フィリップスは、20人の乗組員を自由にしてもらう代わりに自らが海賊の人質となる。
