A fatalistic car crash in Mexico city sets off a chain of events in the lives of three people: a supermodel, a young man wanting to run off with his sister-in-law, and a homeless man. Stéphane Meunier spent the whole time filming the players, the coach and some other important characters of this victory, giving us a very intimate and nice view of them, as if we were with them.

実在のミドル級ボクサー、ジェイク・ラモッタの栄光と挫折の半生。試合シーンの壮絶な迫力は筆舌に尽くし難く、ボクシング映画としてのクォリティも高いが、あくまでも作品の根底にあるのは、自らの猜疑心によって妻や弟を失う男を描いた人間ドラマ。引退後のシーンのため体重を25キロ増やしてまで破滅型の主人公を演じきったデ・ニーロはアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞。全編のほとんどを占める白黒画面も美しい。
