The Story of Liubao (1957)

1950年。第二次世界大戦の終結による満州国の崩壊と国共内戦の終結により、共産主義国である中華人民共和国の一都市となったハルビン駅の構内。5年間にわたるソビエト連邦での抑留を解かれ、中華人民共和国に送還された「戦犯」達がごった返す中で、列から外れた1人の男が洗面所で自殺を試みる。男は監視人の手により一命を取り留めるものの、薄れ行く意識の中で幼い日々の頃を思い出していた。この男こそ清朝最後の皇帝にして満州国の皇帝、「ラスト・エンペラー」と呼ばれた愛新覚羅溥儀その人であった。

1925年、9歳の少年・小豆子は、娼婦の母親に連れられ京劇養成所“喜福成”にやって来た。そこで彼は少年・小石頭と仲良くなる。やがてふたりは成長し、小豆子は女形に、小石頭は男役に決められ、それぞれ程蝶衣、段小樓と名乗り有名スターになっていく。1937年、中国と日本との戦いが深まる中で、段小樓は娼婦の菊仙と出会い結婚する。段小樓に思いを寄せていた程蝶衣は、2度と共演しないと言い放ち、彼のもとを去る。

1940年代の中国。資産家の息子だったフークイだが、賭けに負けてしまい全財産を失う。身重の妻チアチェンは愛想をつかして実家へ戻ってしまった。しかし、半年後、長男が誕生したのを機に夫フークイのもとへと戻ってくる。心機一転、困窮する一家の家計を支えようとフークイは得意の影絵の巡業を始める。そんな矢先、フークイは国民党と共産党の内戦に巻き込まれてしまう。フークイがやっと家族のもとに戻ってきたのは、共産党の勝利が決まり内戦が終結した後だった。一家はその後も、中国現代史の荒波にもまれながらも逞しく生きていく……。

1941年12月。日本軍は真珠湾攻撃に成功したのに続き、中国の上海を攻撃するように。11歳の英国人少年ジムは、日本の“ゼロ戦”のパイロットになるのが夢だったが、戦火を逃れて脱出を図るものの両親とはぐれてしまい、日本軍に捕まって強制収容所で暮らすことに。そこで厳しい管理下に置かれるが、ジムはめげずに、たくましく成長していく。大きな歴史の激動はなおも続き、ジムもそれに巻き込まれていく。

フン族の軍勢に苦しむ戦乱の中国。皇帝は各家から一人の兵士を出すように命じる。ムーランは、老いた父親に代わって軍に兵士として加わることを決意。髪を切り名前をビンと変え、勇猛な兵士に変装する。ムーランは過酷な訓練を経て、戦場で目をみはる大活躍を繰り広げる。

金と名声を得るため、中国へと赴いた白人の傭兵のウィリアムとトバールは、ようやく万里の長城にたどり着き、そこで思いも寄らぬ光景を目の当たりにする。長城では、完全武装した大軍団が、敵を迎え撃つべく臨戦態勢に入っていたが、そこへ巨大な地響きとともに、はるか山の向こうから、未知の怪物の大群が怒濤のごとく押し寄せてきたのだった。その恐るべき正体は、60年に1度現われるという伝説の怪物“とうてつ”だった。

現代から、約2000年前の古代中国。五行を操る魔力と、強大な武力を持った皇帝は、全土制圧の野望に取り付かれていた。その達成の為、不死の力を必要とした皇帝は、妖術師の女ツイ・ユアンに不死の力獲得を命じ、部下のミン・グオ将軍を伴わせ、遥かシルクロードに派遣した。そこでツイ・ユアンは不死の魔術を発見する。目的を果し都に戻って来た2人だが、彼女がミン・グオと愛し合うようになったことを知った皇帝は、2人に卑劣な罠を仕掛けた。愛するミン・グオが処刑される姿を目の当たりにしたツイ・ユアンは、深い悲しみと怒りから皇帝と臣下全員に呪いをかける。

唐王朝がその衰退を呈していた9世紀中頃の中国では、政治の腐敗から国内各地に反政府組織が乱立していた。飛刀門という反乱組織を討伐するよう命を受けた捕吏の劉は、美しい盲目の踊り子・小妹を反乱組織の前頭目の娘と目して捕らえ、組織の情報を白状させようとする。口を割らない小妹を組織の一員であると確信する劉は、同僚の捕吏の金に小妹を救出させ、逃亡の行方を追って組織の拠点をつきとめようと策をたてる。金は小妹を牢から救いだし共に逃避行の旅を続け、劉も2人の後を追う。2人の男と1人の女のあいだには、それぞれの策略と思惑と愛とが交じり合い、壮絶な最後に導かれて行く。

三国時代の中国。漢の丞相の曹操（のちの魏の礎を築いた）は、北部を平定した後、南部も制圧するために兵を進める。その目的は、天下統一に邪魔な劉備・孫権の抹殺だけでなく、今は周瑜の妻となった天下一の美人小喬の奪取にもあった。荊州にいた劉備軍は南下して軍を立て直そうとするが、途中の当陽県長坂にて追いつかれ、敗走する。 夏口へ逃げた劉備は、部下の諸葛亮（孔明）の提案に従い、孔明を孫権（のちに呉を建国）のもとへ派遣する。孔明は孫権の総司令である周瑜と意気投合し、2つの勢力は共に曹操と戦う同盟を結ぶ。孫権は数万の軍勢を派遣し、劉備軍とともに長江の赤壁付近で曹操軍と相対し、両者互いに決戦のために水軍と陸軍を動かすのだった。

唐王朝滅亡後、王家には悪意と策謀が満ちていた。王は妃に毒の入った薬を飲ませ、妃は衰弱の一途を辿る。一方、皇太子には想いを交わす娘がいたのだが……。巨匠チャン・イーモー監督作。
