「パシフィック・リム」のギレルモ・デル・トロ製作のもと、闘牛士の青年が織りなす恋と冒険の物語を、メキシコ独特の生死観を背景に描いたダークファンタジーアニメ。闘牛士の家系に生まれた心優しい男の子マノロは、幼なじみのホアキンやマリアといつも一緒に過ごしていた。やがてマノロとホアキンは、美しく成長したマリアに恋をする。祝祭「死者の日」に彼らの三角関係を見つけた死者の国の支配者ラ・ムエルテとシバルバは、将来どちらがマリアと結婚するかを賭けることに。ホアキンに賭けたシバルバは強大なパワーを持つメダルを彼に渡してマリアを惹きつけ、毒蛇を使ってマノロを死者の国へと誘う。その頃、町が盗賊団に襲撃され、マリアの身に危険が迫っていた。声優には「マジック・マイク」のチャニング・テイタム、「エリジウム」のディエゴ・ルナ、「アバター」のゾーイ・サルダナら豪華メンバーが集結。

Young film student tries to sell his weird movie to a desperate film producer who is in need of a tax write-off. The producer screens the film "Lobster Man From Mars". What follows is one of the most bizarre and funny film within-a-film send-ups: Mars suffers from an air leakage, and send the dreaded Lobster Man to Earth to steal its air. The plot is foiled by a mad scientist, a girl, and an army colonel. The producer buys the movie, but it makes a huge profit and the producer is sent to jail, with the film student taking his place as the studio hot shot.

ハナワカズイチは銃砲刀剣類等不法所持、火薬類取締法違反で懲役3年の刑を受ける。晩秋の日高刑務所で受刑者番号222番を与えられ、刑務所生活が始まった。ハナワはそれぞれひとクセもふたクセもある4人の受刑者たちと同房。ハナワを含めた彼ら5人は次第に奇妙な連帯感で結ばれていく。ハナワにとって刑務所内での暮らしは予想に反して平穏で居心地の良いものだった。厳しく、一見風変わりな規律はたくさんあるが、暴力などは一切なく、テレビも見れて雑誌も読める。刑務所の中では、そんな穏やかな毎日が日々繰り返されていた。
