1890年代のニューヨーク。大学教授のアレクサンダーは、ある日、婚約者のエマを暴漢に殺されてしまう。現実をどうしても受け入れられないアレクサンダーは過去に遡ってエマを救い出したいとの一念で、ついにタイムマシンを発明してしまうのだった。しかし、エマの死んだ日に戻ったアレクサンダーはそこで、エマの運命そのものはどうやっても変えようがないことを知る。諦めきれないアレクサンダーはその理由を解き明かすため、今度は一転、未来へ向け時間移動し2030年の世界へと降り立つのだったが……。

ハウスメイトのキャリーとフィン、そしてジャスパー。3人は偶然に、向いに住んでいた科学者が死亡しているを発見する。 部屋に立ち入り目にしたものは、壁一面に張り出された無数のポラロイド写真と、巨大なマシン。そのマシンは“24時間後"を映し出す、巨大ポラロイドカメラであった。その奇妙な現実に気づいた3人は、そのマシンを自分本位に使用し出す。 自称画家のフィンは、24時間後の自分がどんな傑作を描いているか見ようとし、ドッグレース狂のジャスパーは24時間後に既に発表されている結果を元に、レースを当てまくる。 ある日、ポラロイドカメラは3人の仲に亀裂が入りかねない、“都合の悪い"未来をうつし出してしまう。それを発見したキャリーはそのポラロイド写真を抹消し、自分の未来を少しずつ変えていこうとする。

発明家を夢見る天才少年ルイスは幼いころに母と生き別れ、養護施設で育つ。彼は一目母親に会いたいという一心で、忘れてしまった記憶を呼び戻すマシーンの開発に熱中し、見事成功。科学フェアでの発表の当日、彼の前に未来からやって来たという少年ウィルバーが現れ……。

ジョーは組織も認める腕利きのルーパー（処刑人）。仕事は2074年から2044年に送られてくる標的を、指定された時間に指定された場所で待ち、殺して遺体を処分すること。新たな指令が入り、ジョーは約束の場所でいつものように銃を構えて待つが、目の前に現われたのは、自分に酷似した中年の男。驚愕と混乱で引き金を引くことをためらった現在のジョーの隙をつき、未来のジョーは逃走する。
