Instrument is a documentary film directed by Jem Cohen about the band Fugazi. Cohen's relationship with band member Ian MacKaye extends back to the 1970s when the two met in high school in Washington, D.C.. The film takes its title from the Fugazi song of the same name, from their 1993 album, In on the Kill Taker. Editing of the film was done by both Cohen and the members of the band over the course of five years. It was shot from 1987 through 1998 on super 8, 16mm and video and is composed mainly of footage of concerts, interviews with the band members, practices, tours and time spent in the studio recording their 1995 album, Red Medicine. The film also includes portraits of fans as well as interviews with them at various Fugazi shows around the United States throughout the years.

1990年代半ばのロサンゼルス。13歳のスティーヴィーは兄のイアン、⺟のダブニーと暮らしている。⼩柄なスティーヴィーは⼒の強い兄に全く⻭が⽴たず、早く⼤きくなって彼を⾒返してやりたいと願っていた。そんなある⽇、街のスケートボード・ショップを訪れたスティーヴィーは、店に出⼊りする少年たちと知り合う。彼らは驚くほど⾃由でかっこよく、スティーヴィーは憧れのような気持ちで、そのグループに近付こうとするが…。

ある夜、ロサンゼルスの高級アパートメントから売春婦が飛び降り自殺する。LA市警察本部捜査第一課のロジャー・マータフ部長刑事が現場の捜査を始めた矢先に新しい相棒、マーティン・リッグス刑事が異動してくる。リッグスはマータフよりかなり若いがベトナム戦争では陸軍特殊部隊員として死線をくぐりぬけた経験があり、拳銃射撃と格闘の力量は極めて高い。ただ、3年前に愛妻を事故で亡くして以来、自暴自棄になることが多く市警察本部でも問題になっていた。マータフはこの新しい相棒に困惑しながらも自宅に招くなどして次第に打ち解けるようになっていく。そしてリッグスと共に売春婦飛び降り自殺事件を捜査していくと、背景にCIA特殊部隊のOBたちによるヘロイン密輸組織が浮かび上がってくる。

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was Death. Formed in the early '70s by three teenage brothers from Detroit, Death is credited as being the first black punk band, and the Hackney brothers, David, Bobby, and Dannis, are now considered pioneers in their field. Keen young Raymold Avila joins the Internal Affairs Department of the Los Angeles police.
