大学生の恒夫は、ある朝バイト先の麻雀店から帰る途中、老婆の手を離れて坂道を転げ落ちてくる乳母車と遭遇。その乳母車の中にはひとりの少女が身を隠していた。足が不自由で歩けない彼女は、ときどき祖母に乳母車を押してもらっては気ままな散歩を楽しんでいたのだった。恒夫は、愛読書であるフランソワーズ・サガンの小説のヒロインの名から、自分のことをジョゼと称する風変わりな彼女に、少しずつ心惹かれるようになる。

全員同じ大学に合格して後は卒業を間近に控えるだけとなった唯、澪、律、紬は、部室でお茶を飲みながらいつも通りの時間を過ごしていた。ある日唯たち4人は、教室でクラスメートのバレー部が卒業旅行の計画を立てていることを知り、卒業旅行に行くことを決める。その話を聞いた梓も加えて、行先の候補地を決めることになる。当初あみだくじで決めようとしていたが唯のインチキによりあみだくじは中止に。その後、水槽の中に入れた、それぞれの行きたい場所を書いたティーカップの中から、トンちゃんが触れた場所に決める、という方法をとる。その結果、澪の希望しているロンドンに行くことになった。そして、いざロンドンへ出発した軽音部員達だったが、一方で唯達3年生は、唯の提案で先輩として梓に残すものとして、梓に贈る曲のことを考えていた。

小さな２階建ロッジのパン屋が湖畔に開店した。夫の水縞尚が焼くパンと、妻のりえが入れるおいしいコーヒーが自慢の店。店名は、りえがお気に入りの絵本「月とマーニ」にちなんで「カフェマーニ」。たちまち近所で人気の店になり、子沢山で農家経営の広川一家、謎のトランクを持った阿部さん、地獄耳のガラス作家・陽子さん、そして毎日配達にきてくれる郵便屋さんなどの常連客に憩いの場を提供する。薪の竃で焼いたパンの他、自家菜園の野菜を使った料理も絶品。１階のテーブル席では、大きな窓に湖畔の景色が映え、日が没すると月夜が輝く。２階は簡易宿泊所になっており、ときどき、正面のバス停を利用して遠方から旅行客も訪れる。
