人脈も学歴もないために、仕事にありつけないルイス。たまたま事故現場に出くわした彼は、そこで衝撃的な映像を撮ってはマスコミに売るナイトクローラーと呼ばれるパパラッチの姿を目にする。ルイスもビデオカメラを手に入れ、警察無線を傍受しては、事件現場、事故現場に駆け付ける。その後、過激さを誇る彼の映像は、高値でテレビ局に買い取られるように。やがて局の要望はエスカレートし、それに応えようとルイスもとんでもない行動を取る。
ハロウィーンが近づく中、息子を戦地でなくした一家のもとに彼の戦友だという男デイヴィッド（ダン・スティーヴンス）が訪ねてくる。謙虚で礼儀を重んじる上に、美しい容姿を誇る彼は、瞬く間に一家と心を通わせていく。それぞれが抱えていた悩みや問題を解決してしまう彼をすっかり信頼する一家だが、次第にその姿や言動とはかけ離れた素顔と目的を持っていることが明らかになる。やがて、デイヴィッドの存在は一家のみならず、閑静だった町をも揺るがし始め、ついには彼と特殊部隊の銃撃戦という事態にまで発展する。
