「もっと人生を楽しめ」２人は、そんな決まり文句を実践した。リドリー・スコット監督によるロードムービーでは、２人の友人、専業主婦として退屈な日々を送るテルマ（ジーナ・デイヴィス）と、気の強いウェイトレスのルイーズ（スーザン・サランドン）が、日常から逃れるために、1966年型のサンダーバードに乗り、山へと週末の釣り旅行に出かける。ところが、憂さ晴らししようと、途中で立ち寄ったバーで、テルマがレイプされそうになる。するとルイーズが38口径で男に発砲。何が何だか分からぬまま、２人は逃亡するはめに。全国指名手配犯となった２人は、決意を新たに、無謀な行動に。グランドキャニオンを背景にしたラストシーンで、絶対的な自由を手にした彼女たちの描写が印象的だ。
