Paul Wager played the drums professionally for over 40 years, performing countless gigs and sharing the stage with the likes of BB King and Isaac Scott. However, after suffering a minor stroke he discovered that he could no longer keep the beat and with that painful realisation, his professional career was over. In filmmaker Leo Pfeifer’s documentary short Lost Time, Wager reflects on a life of music which was lost and whether the term drummer still applies to him. Premiering on Directors Notes today, we spoke to Leo about bringing this intimate exploration of what happens when a drummer loses his time to screen.
Merlyn Solakhan’s feature documentary The City offers an unusual narrative on Istanbul. 1998, Nalchik. A Jewish family is in trouble: the youngest son and his bride do not come home, and in the morning, a ransom note arrives. The ransom is so high that the family is forced not only to sell its small business, but also to seek help from its fellow tribesmen.
Zia, distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend, decides to end it all. Unfortunately, he discovers that there is no real ending, only a run-down afterlife that is strikingly similar to his old one, just a bit worse. Discovering that his ex-girlfriend has also "offed" herself, he sets out on a road trip to find her.
The two protagonists – an architect and a prisoner living in parallel realities in the present time and an ambiguous distanced past, respectively – conjure up imaginations and experiences of imprisonment. In their dialogue across space and time they debate the relations between humans, the world, and freedom. They talk of visible and invisible imprisonment, existentialism as a means of self-redemption, and at the same time question the relationship of humans to the space around them. An attempt at reconciliation with the world and human nature.

実体験を基に描かれた、O・ストーン監督によるベトナム映画。クリス・テイラーがベトナムにやって来たのは1967年。大学を中退してまでベトナムに志願したのは、次々と徴兵されてゆく彼と同年代の若者たちのほとんどが、少数民族や貧しい者たちだった事に対する義憤からであった。だが、いきなり最前線の戦闘小隊に配属されたテイラーにとって、戦争の現実は彼の想像をはるかに超えた過酷なものだった。

A post-modern theater adaptation of a classic Greek tragedy takes place in a central theater of Athens. Like every night, the audience take their seats and the play begins. Suddenly, the lights on stage go out. A group of young people, dressed in black and carrying guns, come up on stage. They apologize for the interruption and invite people from the audience to participate on stage. The play resumes with a main difference; life imitates art and not the opposite.
3人の子供を抱えるシングル・マザーのエリンは子供を抱えていては職探しもままならず、信号無視の車に衝突される交通事故に遭う。こちらに過失のない事故だから絶対に勝てると弁護士のエドワードはエリンの弁護を請け負うが、陪審員の目には加害者が医師であるのに対し、エリンは社会的な信用が低く、証言時の言葉遣い悪さも災いして、金目当ての当たり屋と相手側に匂わされた結果敗訴してしまった。事故で負傷したにもかかわらず賠償金を得ることも出来ず、生活に窮したエリンはエドワードに、勝てる裁判で負けたのだから代わりに仕事を斡旋するように要求、半ば強引に彼の事務所で働くようになる。
