人間の子どもたちを怖がらせ、その悲鳴をエネルギー源として用いるモンスターの世界。そこに暮らすモンスター青年マイクは、明朗活発でポジティブな思考の持ち主だったが、仲間よりも体が小さくてルックスもかわいいことに劣等感を抱いていた。これでは子どもたちを絶叫させる“恐がらせ屋”にはなれないと、世界中のモンスターが憧れを抱く名門大学「モンスターズ・ユニバーシティ」に入学。期待に胸を膨らませる彼だが、そこにはサリーを筆頭に大きくて姿が恐ろしい“恐がらせ屋”のエリート候補生があふれていた。

常夏の地・ジャマイカから無謀にもボブスレーチームを組んで、88年カルガリー冬季オリンピックに参戦した男たちの実話を描いたスポ根コメディ。幼い頃から100m走でオリンピックを目指していた主人公が選考会で転倒の巻き添えを食い、出場不可能になってしまう。それでもオリンピック出場の夢を見る彼は冬季五輪のボブスレー競技のことを知り、幼なじみのお調子者や転倒事故で同じく夢破れた2人を巻き込んで、過去に2度金メダルを取ったアメリカ人選手をコーチに招いて練習を開始するのだった……。

カリフォルニア州ミラマー海軍航空基地。そこにF－14トムキャットを操る世界最高のパイロットたちを養成する訓練学校、通称“トップガン”がある。若きパイロットのマーヴェリックもパートナーのグースとともにこのトップガン入りを果たし、自信と野望を膨らませる。日々繰り返される厳しい訓練も、マーヴェリックはグースとの絶妙なコンビネーションで次々と課題をクリアしていく。しかしライバルのアイスマンは、彼の型破りな操縦を無謀と指摘する。その一方で、マーヴェリックは新任の女性教官チャーリーに心奪われていく。
