旧ソ連時代の1959年。ウラル山脈のディアトロフ峠をスキーで越えようとした登山グループが遭難する。後にグループ９名全員が遺体となって発見されるが、内の５名は極寒にも関わらず全裸に近い状態であり、残る４名は舌が無いなど異様な損傷を受けていた。さらに、身に着けていた衣服からは高濃度の放射能までもが検出された。当時さまざまな憶測がなされたが事件は忘れ去られようとしていた。そんな中、5人のアメリカ人学生が事件を調査しようと関係者に取材する。

直径3,200メートル、秒速135メートルというこれまでにない規模の巨大竜巻がシルバータウンの街に襲来する。炎に包まれた巨大竜巻が猛威を振るい、ジャンボジェット機すら飲み込む威力を前に、住民たちはシェルターに避難。一方で、竜巻を追跡する観測者ストームチェイサーや、最愛の人を守り生き残るため危機的状況を打破しようと模索する人々もいた。
