天才少女作家として人気を博した有栖川珠子は、スランプで筆が進まず、海辺のコテージで一人暮らし中。チンピラの中井英二は山西組の幹部である滝口に呼び出された先で、銃に撃たれ負傷した滝口と、同じく銃で撃たれ死亡している山西組長を見つける。滝口から銃の入ったバッグを預かった英二は、滝口から聞いていた組長を撃った女とまったく同じ特徴の珠子を発見し、彼女をバーに連れ込んだ。しかしそこで英二と珠子は二人の殺し屋に襲われ、訳の分からないまま夜の六本木に逃げ出した…。

The story of a Japanese man who as a 16-year-old went to Maui to work in the sugar cane fields in order to support his family back in Japan. Now 89 and still living in Hawaii he is visited by his granddaughter who brings him a letter from his disinherited and recently dead son. This brings back memories of his life with his wife and family following the attack on Pearl Harbor, in particular of his son who had gone off to join the war for the Americans.

予備校の中年講師の三村に弓子は秘かに瞳れていた。ひょんなことから親しく話をする機会があり、薄汚れた駅前の食堂で三村は「男には、自分の傘に女を入れてやりたい奴と、自分が女の傘に入りたい奴と二通りある。俺は入れて貰うほうだ」と弓子に話した。その夜、二人は酔いつぶれて三村の愛人の和子の部屋へ行った。弓子は和子に対して批判的な言葉を投げつけたが、三村に関る人がすべて傷ついていて、傷つきながらもそれぞれの愛を終らせようとはしていないことを知った。三村の家庭は妻の真知子が数年来ノイローゼで、表面的にはうまくいっているように見えたが、虚構の家だった。弓子は志望校の早稲田大学に合格し、三村から高価な家具や指輪をプレゼントされた。50年たったら結婚しようという三村の言葉を理解しようとしながらも、彼を愛したことから始まった行場のない淋しさに疲れ始めていた。ある日弓子は、一人旅から帰って来た和子と会っている三村にばったり会い、なごやかそうな二人の姿を見て動揺してしまう。妻の真知子に電話を入れる三村を、弓子は力なく見ているだけだった。そして、「もう大人のふりはおしまい。秩序正しい大人の世界を崩してしまいました」と三村に別れを告げた。

昭和二十五年に起った天銀堂殺人事件の容疑者、元子爵椿英輔は忌わしい嫌疑を恥辱としてか信州で自殺をとげたが、夫人[火禾]子は今尚英輔の幻影に悩まされていた。令嬢美彌子の頼みで名探偵金田一耕助は一夜椿邸で行われた目賀博士の砂占いに列席した。集った人達は[火禾]子、美彌子、目賀博士の他、[火禾]子の叔父玉虫元伯爵と妾菊江、[火禾]子の兄新宮利彦と妻はな、道楽息子の一彦、椿家執事木下善四郎、書生三島東太郎などであったが、博士の占い通りその夜玉虫伯爵は何者かに殺害された。耕助は英輔の日記の空白を手がかりに神戸に赴き、以前英輔が別邸の管理人植辰の妹お駒を尋ねる目的があった事を調べ上げる。お駒も既に殺害されていたが、お駒の養子宗二郎が失踪している事と、妙光院の痣とり地蔵尊の裏面に彫られた文字から秘密を嗅ぎ出し、急拠東京へ引返す。しかし椿邸では新宮利彦が殺されていた。居並ぶ人々の前で三島青年が動揺しているのを見届けた耕助は逮捕状を携えて再度椿邸の門を潜るが、一同は鎌倉の別邸に行った後だった。その頃鎌倉では新宮利彦と[火禾]子の間に兄妹姦淫の子として生れた三島青年実は宗二郎が、目賀博士と[火禾]子に詰めよっていた。驚いた[火禾]子は青酸カリの盛られた鎮静剤を飲んで一瞬にして絶命。直後到着した耕助は一同の前で始めて事件の顛末を発表した。－－今から二十数年前、[火禾]子は兄利彦に犯されて一児を生み落し、叔父玉虫伯爵はその子を宗二郎と名付け植辰の妹お駒に預けたが、椿家財産横領を企む目賀博士は宗二郎が幼年で死んだ後、植辰と謀ってその子治雄の片腕に火焔太鼓の痣を彫りつけて宗二郎に仕立て上げ、椿家乱倫の実状を明かして復讐を誓わせたのである。かくて真相を知らぬ治雄を三島東太郎の仮名で椿家の書生に送りこんだ目賀博士は英輔に[火禾]子の行状を告げて自殺に追い込み、その亡霊の恐怖を利用して玉虫伯爵、利彦、お駒、[火禾]子と次々に殺害したのである。鋭い耕助の推理と植辰の証言に、目賀博士は拳銃を取って乱射するが、耕助の反撃に挫け、遂に警官に捕われた。...

Coming out of jail and hoping for a quiet life, Yokohama yakuza has to take the lead of his gang after the death of his boss. Sawaki is released from prison after serving eight years for murdering a rival gang leader in order to obtain the land rights to a landfill for the Kotaki clan and he discovers that the world has changed significantly in that time. The police have forced the disbanding of all yakuza groups in and around Tokyo and most of the former yakuza have moved on to legitimate jobs. Sawaki is disgusted that his yakuza brothers have abandoned their codes of honor and are abusing their newfound power in the legitimate business world to exploit the poor. Sawaki feels partly responsible for making them so powerful and enabling their corruption, so he decides to follow his traditional code of honor to save the residents of a small town where his former lover lives.
