Drama set in the historical Warring States Era of Japan. Tokaido name Imagawa Yoshimoto personally led his army to invade Owari Province territory, now in Aichi Prefecture Nagoya City area, was the leader Nobunaga of this surprising burst of death. After the war, the Imagawa clan who originally dominated the Tokaido region fell away, and the victorious Oda Nobunaga quickly expanded his power in Central Japan and the Kinki region, laying the foundation for his future control of the central government of Japan.

100人斬りの異名を持つ万次は、わなによって妹を失い、謎の老人に永遠の命を与えられる。死ぬことのできない無限の体となった今、斬られた傷は自然に治るが、剣術の腕は落ちていた。ある日、孤独な万次の前にあだ討ちを頼みたいという少女・浅野凛が現れる。彼女の願いを聞き入れた万次は、凛と共に剣客集団・逸刀流の首領である天津影久の命を狙う。

舞台の「真四谷怪談」でお岩役を演じるスター女優、美雪の強い推薦で、恋人である俳優の浩介が伊右衛門役に抜擢される。さらに、美雪と旧知の鈴木と新進女優の莉緒がキャスティングされ、舞台稽古がスタートする。稽古が進む中、美雪のおかげで大役をつかんだはずの浩介は共演者の莉緒に手を出してしまう。やがて、愛する浩介に裏切られた美雪の情念が稽古中のお岩の情念と融合し、次第に現実と舞台の境がなくなっていく。

In the year 1926, Machiko Hasegawa is a 6-year-old child and lives in Fukuoka. She is a bright girl, who enjoys playing outdoors. At home, she loves to draw. Her father is a handsome mining engineer and he loves his family more than anything else. When Machiko is 14-years-old her father passes away. The rest of her family decides to move to Tokyo. Her mother than makes a quick decision and sends 15-year-old Machiko to manga artist Tagawa as his student. Machiko's life is peaceful, but the oncoming war makes things tense. Machiko's family moves back to Fukuoka. When the war is about to end, the local newspaper asks Machiko to publish a serial manga. Machiko has difficulties in coming up with an idea for the manga series and decides to go to the nearby Momochi Seaside Park. She watches the ocean and comes up with the idea for manga series "Sazae-san".

あの三池崇史監督が“命を懸けて、何かを守る”男たちの姿を描いた本格派時代劇。歌舞伎界のプリンス・十一代目市川海老蔵が、初老の侍・津雲半次郎を演じている。実年齢とはかけ離れた役柄ながら、入魂の演技で観る者を作品の中へと引き込んでいく。その所作の美しさや殺陣のキレからは、梨園で生まれ育った彼ならではの老成した凄みが感じられる。その海老蔵と好対照をなすのが、若侍・千々岩求女を演じた瑛太だ。愛する者を守りきれない男の切なさを、若々しく表現している。全編3Dカメラで撮影され、日本家屋の奥行きを感じさせる映像の陰影も美しい。自らの信念を守るため、一命を賭して戦う男たちを鮮烈に描いた、三池監督渾身の一作。

The prominent lawyer Kinya Ohtsuka looks over the case of the falsely indicted man who was sentenced to life imprisonment and then committed suicide while incarcerated. One year ago, the prominent lawyer rebuffed the efforts of Kiriko Yanagida to represent her brother. Kiriko Yanagida now works as a hostess in Tokyo while planning revenge on those responsible for her brother's imprisonment.

Koji Namiki is a young pitcher who has shown great promise on the diamond by winning the National High School Basketball Championships. Shortly after entering college, however, Namiki's athletic career is called into question after he suffers a severe elbow injury. But despite a disheartening diagnosis, Namiki is determined to make a comeback. With a little help from his teammates it appears that he is getting back on track, too. Recently, he's even developed a new slow ball that he and his teammates have christened "the magic pitch". Fate can be a cruel mistress though, and when World War II breaks out Namiki the entire team join the navy and begin a training regiment specifically designed to prepare them for the ultimate darkness, an submarine attack method also known as "The Human Torpedo".
