小浜房次郎は、娘トキ子が結婚したいという、町で喫茶店をやっている青年・依田俊一に会った。彼は養子に来て漁師になっても良いと言う。マグロ漁に命賭けで取り組んできた房次郎は、簡単に漁師になると言われて無性に腹だたしく感じた。店をたたみ大間に引越してきた俊一は、毎朝、房次郎の持ち船（第三登喜丸）の前で待ち受け、マグロ漁を教えて欲しいと頼む。十日以上も俊一を無視し続けた房次郎が、一緒に船に乗り込むのを許した。

　北海道を舞台に、誤って人を殺して警察に追われる男と、牧場を経営する母子の出会いと別れを描いた人情ドラマ。監督は“男はつらいよ”シリーズの山田洋次。北海道東部の酪農の町・中標津。風見民子は一人息子の武志を育てながら亡夫の残した牧場をひとりで切り盛りしていた。そんなある日、激しい雨の降る夜、一人の男が民子の家を訪れ、民子は納屋を提供する。その晩、牛のお産があり、男はそれを手伝うと、翌朝、去っていった。男が再びやってきて、働かせてくれと願い出た……。

In consequence, he feels himself "disqualified from being human" (a literal translation of the Japanese title) and goes down the stairs to self-destruction step by step.
