『24時間テレビ愛は地球を救う』のスペシャルアニメ、第12弾です。手塚治虫が少年時代に中国のアニメーション「鉄扇公主(てっせんこうしゅ)」を見てアニメーションに魅せられるエピソードを中心に、アニメーション作家となって行く姿を孫悟空にまつわるエピソードを中心に描いた自伝的アニメを前半とし、後半は西暦3010年の銀河系サファイヤ星を舞台にした新発想のSF版孫悟空となっています。作品の構想中に手塚治虫が急逝したため遺作のひとつとなりました。
