愛情深い性格ゆえに、これまでの人生、ダメ男ばかりを引き寄せては、何度もだまされてきた母・肉子ちゃん。 とんでもなく豪快で、子どもみたいに純粋な母に比べて、しっかりもので大人びた性格の小学5年の娘・キクコ。 ふたりは肉子ちゃんの恋が終わるたびに各地を放浪し、北の漁港の町へと流れ着く。 漁港で途方にくれる母娘の胃を満たしたのは、一軒の焼き肉屋「うをがし」の焼肉だった。 妻に先立たれ、店をたたもうとしていた店主・サッサンは、目の前に現れた肉子ちゃんを”肉の神様”だと思い、 「決しておなかを壊さないこと」を条件に肉子ちゃんを雇いいれる。 こうして、サッサンが所有する漁港の船を住処に、肉子ちゃんとキクコの新しい生活が始まった……！ キクコは地元の小学校に転入する。土地の言葉をきちんと使い、運動神経がよく、まわりの友達から「かわいい」と 言われることが多いキクコは、大阪出身でもないのに大阪弁で思ったことをすぐ口に出し、 町中でマトリョーシカと噂される母・肉子ちゃんの存在を、最近ちょっと恥ずかしいと思っている。 一方、学校ではこの年頃特有の女子グループ間のやっかいな抗争に巻き込まれたり、 風変わりな少年・二宮との出会いで、キクコは少しずつ成長し、この漁港の町をどんどん好きになっていく。 肉子ちゃんの次の恋が終わったら、またこの町を出て行かなければならない。 そんな不安がよぎるキクコと肉子ちゃんの大きな秘密が明らかになり……

Hirayama Koichi and his wife Michiko eloped from Osaka to Okinawa, where they lived happily with their five children. When war erupts, their eldest son is drafted into the Imperial army. As fighting spreads, the family takes refuge far from the city, but soon, child after child is drafted to serve in various branches of the military and in organizations supporting the war cause.
